Effective hygiene habits for the whole family

Updated: Jul 12

Covid has changed many people's hygiene habits because of the fear of how fast Covid spread. "Statistically significant increases in reported hand washing were seen in June 2020 compared with October 2019 in four of the six situations; the odds of remembering to wash hands was 2.3 times higher among respondents after coughing, sneezing, or blowing their nose, 2.0 times higher before eating at a restaurant, and 1.7 times higher before eating at home."(1) Washing your hands after you sneeze, cough, or per chance you handle chickens in your backyard chicken coop, is one of the most important effective daily hygiene habits that we can continue to integrate into society. Should we be impacted again by another pandemic, wouldn't it be great knowing that most people are already washing their hands properly? When I worked in the ER and Trauma pre-Covid, hand washing habits were pretty dismal in particular with patients but sometimes our staff wasn't that great of an example either. Unfortunately, people didn't want to be bothered with taking the time to wash their hands. They didn't see the need for it. But now there has been a live, in our space experience that has proven that hand washing, wearing a mask, and staying home when you are sick can significantly decrease the risk of spreading viruses and bacteria pathogens. Washing your hands and wearing a mask when there is a highly contagious pathogen that's made its way into society is the common sense thing to do. Washing your hands, wearing a mask when you are sick and staying home until you are not contagious is the right thing to do. We have never had any records of a pandemic where we have had this many people available as hosts for pathogens, we have some control in that. Making healthy choices for your immune system and mental health can also greatly impact whether or not you get sick. Please, let's keep some of the good hygiene habits we learned through our Covid experience and add them to our overall mindfulness routine.
